Some artists and athletes come to therapy to improve their performance, but many others become clients to deal with pressures that others don’t typically experience. Drawing from decades of clinical experience and solid psychological research, Dr. Verhaagen will provide a specialized training for mental health professionals on working effectively with performing artists and athletes at all levels (high school, collegiate, and professional). This three-hour workshop explores the unique challenges faced by these high-performance populations, examining their shared traits alongside the ways in which their professional demands, vulnerabilities, and treatment needs differ. Attendees will learn evidence-based strategies for addressing common clinical issues among artists and athletes, and will be introduced to a research validated model of performance enhancement for improving both mental health and performance in creative and competitive pursuits.
